Overview

El universo de la Gran Vía madrileña tiene dos caras:la brillante, repleta de automóviles y engalanada con loscarteles cinematográficos, y la menos floreciente de sus calles laterales donde la vida se presenta activa y bulliciosa pero sinel boato de la avenida principal. En este sector sin brillo, en una gélida portería de la calle Infantas de Madrid, al lado de la Gran Vía, viven los protagonistas de esta novela, una familia compuesta por el matrimonio y dos hijos. En el marco de tres momentos históricos, que funcionan en la novela a la manera de tres actos teatrales, se desenvuelve la acción. En el primer episodio, que ocurre a fines de los años cuarenta, el padre de familia tiene la posibilidad de trabajar en el cine como guionista y eso no le proporciona los beneficios con que soñaba. En el segundo acto, hacia los años sesenta, son los hijos de este matrimonio los que inician su despegue vital, el hijo hereda de su padre la posibilidad de trabajar en una película como actor y la hija sigue los vaivenes de un maestro mayor que ella y antiguo intérprete de teatro clásico del que se ha enamorado. El tercer acto transcurre en el mes de noviembre de 1975, días antes de que muera el Caudillo. En un Madrid desfigurado por la niebla y obsesionado por los sucesivos informes médicos sobre la salud del dictador, en los que se detalla el inexorable desguace a que se somete su cuerpo, la familia de los porteros de la calle Infantas acomete misiones extravagantes. Estas historias y estos personajes comparten una de las cualidades más nobles y también peor valoradas del ser humano: la ingenuidad. El militar Monterde, el cura Expósito, el sibilino Cárdenas, la dogmática Beni, la prostituta Engracia, Trinidad el de los gatos o el afligido tabernero de Baco se presentan en la vida desarmados de estrategias y sufren la destemplada reacción de su entorno. En esta novela inquietante, sentimental y divertida, donde la ilusión es la inseparable compañera del fracaso, unos seres exaltadospor quimeras sin fundamento se niegan a la desesperanza.
